She writes both fiction and nonfiction to encourage children to explore their world. Readers will find pets, friendship, and family sprinkled throughout Gwendolyn’s stories because that’s what inspires her. Her latest, the eight book Pet Club series is all about pets: a cat, dog, fish, and a rat. Even her nonfiction books are about animals and a few plants.
She believes every child should be and can be a passionate reader like her. She writes funny books, adventurous books, mysterious books, as well as informative books to pique the interest of the child who struggles with reading. Gwendolyn believes that if you’re a reader, even the farthest reaches of the world open up and you are right there in the middle of it.
Her book, Tiny Stitches – The Life of Medical Pioneer Vivien Thomas, won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Children. The book was also listed on The Best Children’s Books of the Year, 2017 Edition by Bank Street College of Education.
