Gwendolyn Hooks is the author of 20 books for children. She writes both fiction and nonfiction to encourage children to explore their world. Readers will find pets, friendship, and family sprinkled throughout Gwendolyn’s stories because that’s what inspires her. Her latest, the eight book Pet Club series is all about pets: a cat, dog, fish, and a rat. Even her nonfiction books are about animals and a few plants.
Tiny Stitches – The Life of Medical Pioneer Vivien Thomas, won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Children. The book was also listed on The Best Children’s Books of the Year, 2017 Edition by Bank Street College of Education. Vivien was a young African American man who without a medical degree or a college education, designed the surgical technique that showed doctors how to operate on children born with Tetralogy of Fallot or Blue Babies.
